The 2023 Louisiana American Innovation Dollar (Buy on eBay) depicts a Higgins Boat—a Landing Craft, Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP) credited with helping the Allies win World War II.
Designed by Andrew Jackson Higgins, the Higgins Boat allowed infantry or small vehicles to exit through a front ramp. Before its invention, troops unloaded from landing crafts by jumping over the side, which exposed them to hostile fire. Higgins Boat changed the way that war was fought. It allowed armies to unload across an open beach and have more options in choosing their attack points.
The reverse design depicts a Higgins Boat as it would have been deployed during World War II with its innovative landing ramp open against a beach. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” “THE HIGGINS BOAT,” and “LOUISIANA” written in a cursive typeface. The design was created by AIP artist Dennis Friel and sculpted by medallic artist John P. McGraw.
