The 2023 Indiana American Innovation Dollar (Buy on eBay) recognizes the state’s many contributions to the automobile industry, especially in automobile manufacturing and promoting automobiles in American culture.
Indiana has a deep-rooted history in the automotive industry, dating back to the 20th century. The state has been home to many prominent automobile manufacturers. Promotion for automobiles in American culture was also done mainly through the famous Indianapolis 500 race, one the oldest in the country, created by Carl Fisher, who also conceived the Lincoln Highway—the first transcontinental highway across the U.S.
The reverse of the 2023 Indiana American Innovation Dollar depicts several different types of cars that were developed in Indiana, including an early gas automobile, a classic car and an Indy-500 race car. It includes the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “INDIANA.” The reverse was designed by Ron Sanders and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
