Between 1933 and 1944, the TVA built 16 hydroelectric dams in the Tennessee Valley, propelling Tennessee to become the leading provider of public utilities nationwide. The TVA successfully orchestrated a rural electric cooperative owned by farmers near Tupelo, Mississippi. This achievement led the federal government to establish a dedicated agency, the Rural Electrification Administration (REA), solely focused on electrifying rural areas.
