2022 Rhode Island American Innovation Dollar (Buy on eBay) recognizes naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff’s famous Reliance yacht, which incorporated numerous technical innovations when it was built in 1891. The vessel was a contender in the 1903 America’s Cup and was funded by members of the New York City Yacht Club.
At the time of her launching in 1903, Reliance was the largest single-masted vessel in the world. Her design showcased groundbreaking engineering, using cutting-edge materials like nickel steel and Tobin Bronze, as well as innovative structural techniques later seen in aircraft construction. With its enormous sail area and unique structural design, Reliance pushed the boundaries of yacht engineering and prompted revisions in racing rules.
The reverse design depicts Nathanael Herreshoff’s famous Reliance yacht at full speed in the waters surrounding Rhode Island. The design is bordered by a rope evoking the nautical scene. This side has the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “RHODE ISLAND.” The reverse was designed by AIP artist Dennis Friel and sculpted by Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.
